Basil seeds come from India, this is different from Tulsi seeds which are called holy basil.

Sabja seeds are rich in nutrients so they have many benefits for health. Basil or Tukmaria seeds contain lots of protein, carbohydrates, essential fats, fiber, and are free of calories.

Sabja seeds or basil seeds are consumed after soaking in water, this is because they have a very hard texture. Soaked in water, it will soften like jelly. This is the basil seed, Ocimum basilicum, which is often used as a cooking spice. So, because it comes from the basil plant, it is also popular with the name basil seeds.

Sabja seeds are well known in Ayurvedic medicine and traditional Chinese medicine. However, it is only recently that sabja seeds have become known to have many nutritional and health benefits. Here we will see what are the health benefits of basil seeds or sabja seeds.

1. Cure constipation

Basil seeds or sabja seeds help neutralize the acidity in the stomach due to HCL acid and relieve heartburn. The water content (due to being immersed in water) in the sabja seeds is useful for soothing the stomach lining. This will soothe the burning sensation in the colon.

3. Lose weight

The benefits of sabja seeds are the same as consuming weight loss drinks. These basil seeds are rich in alpha-linolenic acid. So, it is known that one of the benefits of consuming these seeds is to calm the stomach and lose excess weight.

The fiber content keeps you full for a long time and prevents snacking. This really helps you lose weight naturally.

4. Controlling blood sugar

The health benefits of sabja seeds are also good for people with blood sugar or type 2 diabetes. It slows down the conversion of carbohydrates to sugar so that blood sugar does not spike. You could say sabja seeds are food with a low glycemic index.

5. Sabja is good for hair and skin

Basil seeds are good for skin health. The mashed basil seeds are mixed with coconut oil and applied to areas of the skin which are known for eczema or psoriasis. This will soothe the skin and is good for nourishing the skin on the outside. If you consume sabja seeds regularly, the benefit is to help the skin release collagen. This is very important for the formation of new skin cells.

A study published in the “American Journal of Clinical Nutrition” shows that lenolenic acid can lose weight if consumed regularly.

How Do Sabja Seeds Lose Weight?

To get the benefits of consuming sabja seeds, these seeds must be soaked first. After soaking and the sabja seeds look clear with a soft outer membrane, now you can consume them. Usually, Sabja seeds are added to juice or other delicious drinks.

If you want to lose weight with sabja seeds, soak two teaspoons in a cup filled with warm water. After 15 minutes, consume immediately. You can also sprinkle the seeds in salads, or in fruit soups. There are also those who add sabja seeds to green tea or lemonade.

Sabja Seeds Side Effects

So far, if consumed in medium amount, sabja seeds have no adverse effects on health. However, if consumed in excess, sabja seeds sometimes cause some side effects.

If you are being treated with certain drugs. So, you should consult your doctor about the ability to consume sabja seeds. The recommended amount of sabja seeds is not to exceed one tablespoon per day. However, this can be different from one person to another.

Some of the side effects of excessive consumption of sabja seeds are: diarrhea, nausea, acne, vomiting, acid reflux, abdominal discomfort, headache, loss of appetite and such. Basil seeds sometimes also cause low blood sugar, so diabetics should always control their blood before consuming sabja seeds.

Health care providers usually do not recommend sabja seeds for consumption by pregnant women and children. In children, sabja seeds can choke because they are not well submerged in water. Meanwhile, for pregnant women, because sabja seeds can reduce the hormone estrogen, it is not good for pregnant women.
